What Safety Measures Should Universities Take in Response to the PLASU Attack and Similar Threats?

Tunde Macus. April 19, 2024 @1:37 pm

It's unfortunate to hear that on April 18, 2024, Plateau State University (PLASU) was attacked by gunmen in the Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria. A 200-level student in the Computer Science department lost their life during the attack, and the situation caused chaos and fear among the students.

This incident is part of a larger pattern of violence in the region, and it's essential to address the root cause of such violence to prevent future attacks. It's commendable that university security officers successfully prevented abductions when gunmen attempted to kidnap students from PLASU’s women’s hostel on May 9, 2023. Similarly, the security operatives were able to foil another attempt on the female hostel by repelling the bandits the following day.

It's crucial to ensure the safety and security of students and staff at PLASU. The authorities must investigate the incident and take appropriate measures to prevent such attacks in the future. My heart goes out to the PLASU community, and I hope that everyone affected by this tragedy receives the support they need to heal and rebuild. video of incident is circulating on social media. https://twitter.com/i/status/1781327791910224361

Governor Caleb Mutfwang has condemned the recent heinous acts and urged for calm. He reassured citizens, especially students, of the government's commitment to safeguarding their lives and property. The government is determined to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for these acts. Mutfwang stressed the importance of collaboration between university management, students, community leaders, and security agencies to enhance security in the area. He expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased student and all those affected.

At the moment, there is not much information available on the specific relief efforts being made for the students and families affected by the recent events at Plateau State University (PLASU). However, it is common for local authorities, humanitarian organizations and concerned citizens to come together and provide assistance in such situations. Relief efforts could already be underway, but it is essential to gather further information from reliable news sources or official statements.

If you are interested in helping those affected, I suggest keeping a close watch on updates from trustworthy news outlets. Additionally, you might want to consider contacting local organizations that are involved in disaster response and relief efforts. These organizations are usually at the forefront of such initiatives and can provide valuable information on how to contribute or donate to help the victims and their families during this difficult time.
