Rwandan President Paul Kagame has secured a fourth consecutive term, winning over 99% of the vote in the recent general election. With 79% of the ballots counted, Kagame led his next-placed rival, Frank Habineza, by more than 7 million votes. The election was hailed as a success despite only two candidates being allowed to run against Kagame. His landslide victory consolidates his position as the leader who has dominated Rwanda’s politics for three decades since the 1994 genocide. Kagame, who has been in office since 2000, amended the constitution in 2015 to allow him to seek a third term in 2017 and two subsequent five-year terms.
