What gave the UK the competitive edge in hosting the Invictus games over the US?

Birmingham's triumphant bid to host the 2027 Invictus Games, surpassing Washington DC, was a result of various impactful elements. Birmingham put forward a compelling £26 million proposal, supported by the UK government, which deeply resonated with its strong emotional connection to the armed forces. The city's emphasis on creating a lasting legacy and impact for the games, along with its impressive experience in hosting the Commonwealth Games in the past, played a pivotal role in securing this victory. The National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham, serving as a single venue for the games, further strengthened the sense of unity and togetherness for this remarkable event.

The bid from the city of Washington, championed by Events DC, has highlighted numerous potential venues in and around the city, with a strong emphasis on the George Washington University campus, a location that offers unparalleled facilities and resources. It also encompasses a visionary sports schedule encompassing the nine core Invictus Games sports, with the exciting addition of esports.

No members of the Royal Family attended the anniversary event in May. Nonetheless, it's anticipated that UK-based royals may participate in the upcoming Invictus Games in Birmingham.

A statement was released by Prince Harry regarding the decision: "Congratulations to Birmingham, UK, on winning the bid to host the Invictus Games 2027.

"Your city’s strong ties to the Armed Forces community made it a formidable contender from the very start. "Over the years, we’ve seen each city bring a unique spirit and vision to life for competitors, their families, and spectators.

"We have no doubt the people of Birmingham will join in celebrating the unwavering respect and admiration we have for our veteran and service community, showing the world how their courage ignites hope and unites us all—something your city knows well. "As part of the announcement by the Invictus Games Foundation, a flag raising ceremony attended by the newly appointed Minister for Veterans and People, the Rt Hon Al Carns OBE MC will be held on the morning of the 23rd of July at the NEC, the site of the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027.

"This will be followed by a demonstration of some of the new sports from the Games, Pickleball and Laser Run, with former competitors from the Invictus Games."
