Unjust Detainment: Insights from 16 U.S. Lawmakers on the Binance Executive's Situation in Nigeria

by Mary Ekpeanwan 6/6/2024

Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive, has been detained in Nigeria since April. Concerns have been raised by some U.S. lawmakers about the circumstances of Mr. Gambaryan's detention. The Senators claim Nigeria is holding him hostage and they have requested support from President Joe Biden to secure his release. They believe there may be inconsistencies in the charges against Mr. Gambaryan and stress the importance of ensuring his well-being.

Nigeria's information minister has refuted these claims, stating, "We are a responsible country, and we must ensure that everyone being investigated or tried under our laws is healthy enough to answer our questions." A political prisoner held by the DSS has urgently requested to be transferred to Kuje prison for essential medical treatment. Despite his deteriorating health and numerous appeals to the courts, the authorities have consistently denied his request.

Mr. Gambaryan is currently in the Kuje Correctional Centre, a high-security prison in Abuja. His health and safety are major concerns for the senators, especially as his recent court appearance was adjourned due to his reported illness, which has heightened worries about his well-being.

While fears for Mr. Gambaryan's well-being persist, it is crucial to approach this situation with a diplomatic and objective perspective. The international community’s involvement in addressing his case, as well as the broader issue of individuals detained in Nigeria, is essential in ensuring a fair and transparent resolution.
