The proposed Kano State Emirate Council Law 2024, which the Kano State House of Assembly, the legislative arm of the state government, passed on Thursday, May 23, technically dethroned Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano. The law recognizes former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor Lamido Sanusi as the new Emir of Kano. Sanusi’s portrait has already been placed on the giant wall of the Coronation Hall of the Government House in Kano. In contrast, Aminu Bayero’s portrait has been removed, signaling Sanusi’s return to the palace. Governor Abba Yusuf must consent to the proposed amendment law before official announcements are completed. Aminu Bayero reportedly fled the palace and Kano to Ijebu and is currently in Ilorin. The Kano State Assembly, as part of its legislative duties, has also abolished all the new emirates created by ex-governor Ganduje.
